Why routes matter

Preparing for a driving test around Torbay means being comfortable with a wide range of roads and traffic conditions, from busy town centres and residential streets to hills, roundabouts and faster connecting roads.

Knowing the Torbay test routes takes a lot of the surprise out of test day. Here is how we help you prepare. This guide is part of our Learning Hub — friendly, no-jargon answers to the questions learners across Torbay and South Devon ask us most. Examiners use a set of routes around the Torbay area. Practising them builds familiarity with the junctions, roundabouts and manoeuvres you are likely to meet.

Driving situations to practise around Torbay

Because Torbay covers several different towns and surrounding areas, learners can experience a useful variety of road conditions during their lessons.

Your test preparation should include experience of:

  • busy town traffic and pedestrian areas
  • hill starts and driving on gradients
  • larger roundabouts and choosing the correct lane
  • meeting traffic on narrower residential roads
  • parked vehicles and changing road widths
  • moving between different speed limits
  • faster roads connecting different parts of the bay
  • following road signs and directions independently
  • approaching unfamiliar junctions safely

The aim isn’t to remember what happens at individual locations. It’s to develop observation, planning and judgement that you can use wherever you’re asked to drive.

What should I practise before my driving test?

As you approach test standard, your lessons should increasingly involve driving independently across a variety of roads rather than repeatedly practising the same familiar routes.

We’ll focus on any situations you still find difficult, which could include roundabouts, hills, meeting traffic, busy junctions, manoeuvres or choosing the correct position and speed.

Mock driving tests can also help identify areas that still need work by giving you an opportunity to drive with less help from your instructor.

Read our driving test preparation guide for more on preparing for test day.

Should I learn driving test routes?

Knowing the local roads can help you feel more comfortable, but trying to memorise test routes isn’t a substitute for being able to drive independently.

You may encounter an unfamiliar road, different traffic conditions or be asked to follow directions you weren’t expecting. You need to be able to assess those situations safely rather than depend on recognising where you are.

Practising across different parts of Torbay gives you experience adapting your driving to different roads and conditions instead of relying on a memorised route.
