Get test-ready with mock tests and practice on local test routes, so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.

Driving test preparation is for learners who are approaching test standard and want to make sure they’re ready for the practical driving test.
At this stage, lessons focus less on learning completely new skills and more on bringing everything together: driving independently, dealing confidently with different road and traffic conditions, improving any weaker areas and making safe decisions without relying on prompts from your instructor. Mock driving tests can then help you experience what driving under test conditions feels like before the real thing.
As you get closer to test standard, your instructor will focus on the areas that could still prevent you from driving safely and independently.
We’ll practise the types of roads and situations you’re likely to encounter locally, work on manoeuvres and independent driving, and use mock driving tests to see how you perform with less help from your instructor.
After a mock test, you’ll get clear feedback on any faults or weaker areas so your remaining lessons can concentrate on what still needs improving.
A mock driving test gives you the chance to practise driving under conditions that are closer to the real practical test.
Your instructor will reduce the usual coaching and prompting so you need to make more of the decisions yourself. This can highlight habits or mistakes that aren’t as obvious during a normal lesson.
Afterwards, you’ll go through what happened, including any faults that need attention and the areas you handled well. The aim is to identify what still needs work before test day rather than simply giving you a pass or fail result.

Being able to complete individual manoeuvres or drive a familiar route isn’t enough on its own. You need to be able to put your skills together consistently and drive safely without regular help from your instructor.
As you approach test standard, you should be increasingly comfortable making your own decisions, dealing with unfamiliar situations and recognising and correcting problems without being prompted.
Your instructor can use normal lessons and mock tests to identify whether there are still areas that need more work before your practical test.
If your practical test is approaching, tell us when it’s booked, how much driving experience you have and what your instructor has said about your current standard.
If you’re already learning with us, your instructor can build test preparation and mock tests into your lessons as you become ready.
For more general advice about the practical test itself, read our practical driving test guide and how to pass your driving test.
