Feeling nervous is completely normal — and something our instructors are used to. Calm, patient, no-pressure lessons make all the difference.

Feeling nervous before driving lessons is common, especially when you don’t know what to expect. Knowing how your first lessons work and telling your instructor what you’re worried about can make getting started feel much more manageable.
This guide is part of our Learning Hub — friendly, no-jargon answers to the questions learners across Torbay and South Devon ask us most.
A large share of learners feel anxious before their first lesson. It fades quickly once you start.
Yes. There are plenty of reasons you might feel nervous before learning to drive. You may be worried about controlling the car, making a mistake, driving in traffic or simply not knowing what will happen during the lesson.
You don’t need to arrive at your first lesson already feeling confident. Learning how to control the car, understand what’s happening around you and make safe decisions is what the lessons are for.
Tell your instructor if you’re nervous. It helps them understand how you’re feeling and adjust the pace of the lesson accordingly.
Your instructor can start somewhere suitable for practising the basics and introduce new skills gradually rather than expecting you to deal with everything at once.
If something feels overwhelming, say so. You can spend more time practising a skill before moving on, ask your instructor to explain something again or take a moment to talk through what happened.
As you become more comfortable with the car, your lessons can gradually introduce different roads, junctions, traffic conditions and driving situations.
If you’d prefer tuition specifically built around building confidence, see our nervous driver lessons.
A few simple things can make your lessons feel more manageable:
Confidence usually develops through experience. The aim isn’t to rush through each stage — it’s to become comfortable enough with each skill to use it safely and independently.
Not knowing what will happen can make a first lesson seem more intimidating than it needs to be.
Your instructor will introduce the car and its controls, talk through your previous experience and begin at a level suitable for you. If you’ve never driven before, you won’t be expected to immediately deal with busy roads or complicated situations.
Read our first driving lesson guide to see what you can expect before you get in the car.
You will make mistakes while learning to drive. They’re part of learning a new skill and give you and your instructor something specific to work on.
Rather than dwelling on a mistake, try to understand what happened and what you could do differently next time. Your instructor can help you break the situation down and practise it again when appropriate.
The goal isn’t to drive perfectly from your first few lessons. It’s to gradually become safer, more confident and more independent.
If nerves are making it difficult to start or continue learning, tell us when you enquire. We can take that into account from the beginning and focus on building your confidence gradually.
