An intensive course condenses your learning into a short, focused period so you can pass in weeks rather than months.

An intensive driving course condenses your lessons into a shorter period, with more frequent tuition than traditional weekly driving lessons. Here’s how intensive courses work and what to consider before choosing one.
This guide is part of our Learning Hub — friendly, no-jargon answers to the questions learners across Torbay and South Devon ask us most.
Confident, committed learners with a test date coming up or a need to pass quickly.
Intensive driving courses can suit learners who have enough time to take lessons regularly over a shorter period and are comfortable learning at a faster pace.
They can be particularly useful if you already have some driving experience, are returning to lessons after a break or have a practical test approaching and want to concentrate your remaining tuition.
Complete beginners can also learn intensively, but there isn’t a fixed course length that will suit everyone. How much tuition you need depends on your existing experience and how quickly your driving develops.
Instead of spreading your driving lessons across several months, an intensive course puts your tuition into a more concentrated period.
You’ll still develop the same core driving skills, including car control, junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres, independent driving and dealing with different road and traffic conditions. The difference is that you’ll usually have less time between lessons.
As your driving develops, lessons can focus increasingly on independent driving and the areas that still need improvement. Mock driving tests may also be used when you’re approaching test standard.
See our intensive driving lessons if you’re looking for course availability and booking information.
There isn’t one intensive course length that’s right for every learner.
If you’ve already had driving lessons, the amount of additional tuition you need will depend on your current standard and which skills still need work. A complete beginner may need considerably more tuition than somebody who is already close to test standard.
An assessment of your existing experience and driving ability can help determine a realistic amount of tuition rather than choosing a course simply because it promises a particular number of hours.

Intensive learning isn’t automatically better than taking weekly lessons. The right approach depends on how you learn, your previous driving experience and how much time you can realistically commit.
An intensive course may suit you if you:
Weekly lessons may suit you better if you prefer more time between sessions to absorb what you’ve learned, have limited availability or find longer periods behind the wheel tiring.
We offer intensive driving lessons across Torbay and South Devon, with the amount and structure of tuition based on your existing experience and availability.
